First boutique hotel in the Caribbean receives a Tourism Declaration

The Hotel Aguas Claras, located in Puerto Viejo, Limón, received a Tourism Declaration for its accommodation activities and related services. This is the first boutique hotel in the region to receive this certification.

The Tourism Declaration is an award granted by the Costa Rican Tourism Board to all businesses in the sector that voluntarily request it. There is no cost to receive it; rather, businesses must comply with technical, economic and legal requirements indicated in the Regulation on Tourism Businesses and Activities.

In December 2018, a new Regulation on Tourism Businesses was approved, which set out the requirements to register with the ICT. This regulation widens the categories to register as tourism businesses and simplifies the process. (The regulation only applies to declarations).
