Between May and June, country saw the arrival of three new flights to Liberia
- The result is the product of joint action by the Costa Rican Tourism Board, the Daniel Oduber International Airport and the Guanacaste Chamber of Tourism.
Aeroméxico, Sunwing and United will operate new flights to Daniel Oduber International Airport, either temporarily or permanently, while Air Canada is increasing the frequency of its services.
This result was achieved in the first two months of the Alvarado Quesada administration, and was the product of a joint strategy to attract airlines to Liberia by the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT), the Liberia airport, and the Guanacaste Chamber of Tourism (Caturgua).
The Aeroméxico service between Mexico City and Liberia will be the first flight from North America to the Guanacaste city originating in a country other than the United States or Canada. This airline will begin its flights on the 10th of November and will continue with two weekly flights until April 21, 2019. It will use Embraer 190 aircraft with a 99-passenger capacity.
Sunwing will fly to Liberia beginning on December 23rd of this year until March 31, 2019, offering the first-ever direct route from Vancouver, Canada, to Daniel Oduber.
United has confirmed that it will continue operating its Houston-Liberia flight twice per week. Meanwhile, Air Canada will increase the frequency of its flights from Montreal and Toronto to Daniel Oduber beginning in December 2018. The Toronto-Liberia route will increase its flights from four flights per week to daily operations beginning on December 15th of this year. The Montreal-Liberia route will increase from one to three weekly flights beginning December 18th.
“We have been joining our forces to diversify the market of flights to Liberia, an objective that we have been working on in collaboration with the private sector”, said Maria Amalia Revelo, the Minister of Tourism.
Currently, 11 airlines fly to Liberia. Six companies operate from cities in the United States, three from Canadian cities, one from Panama City, and one from London, England.
In 2017, 525,661 international arrivals to Costa Rica were recorded in the Liberia airport, 74.7% of which originated in the United States of America. From January to May of the current year, 287,355 arrivals have been recorded, according to data from the Directorate-General for Immigration and Foreign Nationals analyzed by ICT.
“The United States remains the main sender of tourists to Costa Rica, with a potential market of 24 million people. It remains a priority to convert this number into more tourists traveling to this country”, Revelo emphasized.
