      Derby’s woolly opossum, mountain goat, tayra, oncilla, howler monkey and white-faced capichin.
More than 230 species of birds have been observed in the area, including the Montezuma oropendola, which congregates to build large numbers of hanging nests in a single tree. There are also vultures, blue-headed parrots, squirrel cuckoo, spectacled owl, blue-chested hummingbird, slaty-tailed trogon, green kingfisher, and keel- billed toucan. Some have reduced populations, such as the long-eared owl, great black hawk and basket bird. Others, like the long-tailed tyrant, oropendolas and kingfishers, red-winged blackbirds, toucans and guans, are commonly seen during walks along the trails and in the river.
It is also common to see leaf-dwelling frogs, chirbalas, gallegos, cherepos and snakes, both venomous and harmless. About 30 species of amphibians and 30 species of reptiles are known to live here.
The invertebrates include bullet ants and leaf- cutter ants, colorful butterflies such as those of the genus Morpho, huge dragonflies, bees and metallic-colored bumblebees. As for plant species, about 380 are known. The forests are evergreen and very dense.
How to get there
To reach the reserve, continue
from Limón towards Cahuita, turning off at Penshurt (after crossing the Río La Estrella). The road leads you to La
Guaria, Pandora and finally to Valle de la Estrella, at Finca 12 turn south, at Finca 16 turn west. The reserve administration is located 5 km on from Finca Cartagena, following a gravel path with are signs along the road.
